Saving money on my car insurance! A story about “my Driving Discount”.

So this blogger decided to switch her insurance to Intact and try the “my Driving Discount” program.

I mean, why wouldn’t I?  I want my insurance premium to reflect me, not someone else’s driving habits. I’m all about saving money!

Isn’t that what everyone is concerned about, paying high insurance rates based on someone else’s driving?

“my Driving Discount” is a program whereby you install a telematics device into the onboard diagnostic port or OBD for short and it begins to record your driving behaviour.

Check out this video on how it all works:

How much of a discount you receive depends on the following “driving behaviours”:

  1. Rapid Accelerations: any increase in speed of 12 km/h or more in 1 second.
  2. Hard Braking: any decrease in speed of 12 km/h or more in 1 second.
  3. Time of day: Driving at night (between 12 a.m. – 4 a.m.)
  4. Number of kilometres driven.

Right off the bat, I was saving money!  I received 10% off my insurance premium just for enrolling.

My driving will be assessed for six months and then I return my device to Intact and will receive my discount on my next renewal.

I get an email every week on how I’m doing and I can log on to my own “dashboard” to check on my progress.

I have to say it’s been an interesting experience as you become more aware of how you drive.   I had one hard braking incident where I did one those ”rolling stops” at a stop sign, not really not taking the time to stop and look both ways, and had a car coming from my left so I had to brake suddenly.  To me it was just a tap on the brakes.

Many people I have talked to are not comfortable with this for one reason or the other.

The thing is, if this is not your cup of tea, it’s nice to know that if your insurance is through a brokerage, like W.C. Burgess Insurance, your broker has many other insurance companies to look at because saving money is important to us too.
